Mexico won a World Cup knockout stage match for the first time since 1986 after defeating Ecuador 2-0. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Mexico City to celebrate this historic victory. However, the unbridled joy turned into tragedy; three people—including a young woman—died from suffocation due to extreme overcrowding during the celebratory gatherings on Tuesday night (local time). The BBC reported this news.

Mexico City health authorities stated that the deceased included a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman, and a 44-year-old man. More than a million people had gathered around the ‘Angel of Independence’ monument in central Mexico City to celebrate the country’s historic win. When the victims began experiencing breathing difficulties amidst the crushing crowd, health workers administered first aid and CPR before rushing them to specialized hospitals.

However, they could not be saved. Doctors pronounced them dead, and their families have already identified the bodies. Mexico City’s Head of Government, Clara Brugada Molina, expressed deep sorrow over this tragic incident and pledged to provide all forms of state assistance to the affected families.
