US President Donald Trump harshly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a phone call and warned that the US-Israel relationship could head toward a ‘divorce.’ These explosive claims have surfaced in a new book.
Excerpts from the book Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump—authored by New York Times journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan—were published in various international media outlets on Tuesday (June 23).
According to the report, this heated phone call took place in September 2025. At the time, Trump was attempting to persuade Israel to accept a peace plan regarding Gaza.
The US President’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were also part of the call.
According to the book, Trump told Netanyahu, “Everyone is tired of you, Bibi. All the Jews are tired of you. Even the two Jews on this call are tired of you.”
He added, “Everyone hates you, yet I have stood by you.” Trump then warned that if Israel did not accept the deal, the relationship between the two countries could lead to a ‘divorce.’
The report further notes that there was close cooperation between Trump and Netanyahu during the initial weeks of the US-Israel war against Iran, which began on February 28; both had praised this collaboration.
However, as the war stalled and peace negotiations became complicated, Trump gradually adopted a critical stance. He criticized Israeli attacks in Lebanon and, at one point, described Netanyahu as ‘irrational’ and ‘crazy.’
A Washington Post report stated that US intelligence agencies had warned Trump that Netanyahu might undermine efforts to establish peace regarding Iran. The report further states that both Trump and Netanyahu have faced criticism, with the interim agreement reached between the United States and Iran in recent weeks being deemed a failure in achieving the two nations’ war objectives.
