Stephen Miller Appointed Chief of Staff: Trump Prepares for a Fight

Donald Trump has selected Stephen Miller as the new White House Chief of Staff. This appointment signals that Trump is gearing up for an intense battle within the American political landscape—specifically, a political confrontation with the new, Democrat-controlled Congress. The move follows the resignation of Susie Wiles, which came just days after the Republican Party’s crushing defeat in the U.S. midterm elections.

According to reports from CNN and the BBC, President Trump was deeply frustrated with his party’s strategy, particularly following the loss of Republican dominance in both chambers of Congress. Wiles decided to step down after facing the brunt of Trump’s ire. Miller is set to assume his new role this coming Monday.

This marks the first major shake-up within the Trump administration following the election defeat. Before departing for an event in Florida on Friday, Trump remarked that Miller has been with him from the very beginning and is highly politically astute. He added that Wiles would remain involved in his political operations and insisted that this change is unrelated to the election results.

However, sources within the White House indicate that Trump expressed his anger on election night, holding Wiles responsible for the outcome. Meanwhile, Wiles has been navigating a difficult personal period while undergoing treatment for breast cancer. As the first woman to serve as Chief of Staff, she held the position longer than any of her predecessors during Trump’s first term.

The new Chief of Staff, Stephen Miller, is known as the primary architect of the Trump administration’s hardline immigration policies. Previously, he set an unprecedented target for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials to arrest 3,000 immigrants daily. It is also reported that Miller’s wife, Katie Miller, lobbied behind the scenes for his promotion. With this appointment, it is expected that the Trump administration will further intensify its strict immigration agenda. A Department of Homeland Security official remarked that this move signals a return to the “old Trump.” However, Miller’s appointment has sparked a sharp backlash among Democrats. House Leader Hakeem Jeffries launched a scathing critique, labeling Miller a “dangerous xenophobe” and a “reckless extremist.” Miller previously stirred controversy by describing Alex Prieto—who was shot and killed by immigration officials in Minneapolis—as a “domestic terrorist” and an “assassin.” Furthermore, he played a significant role in military and anti-narcotics operations in Venezuela and the Caribbean, which were later condemned as involving extrajudicial killings.

Defense Secretary-designate Pete Hegseth expressed approval of the appointment, noting that Miller “never backs down.” Meanwhile, Hegseth’s relationship with Susie Wiles was already strained. Additionally, although Vice President-elect J.D. Vance recently suggested a greater focus on businesses that employ undocumented workers, the arrival of a hardliner like Miller makes the implementation of such a policy appear unlikely. Even within his own party, Miller is a divisive figure; while Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina has deemed him unqualified, Senator Mike Lee of Utah has praised him as a “conservative warrior.” Miller also previously mocked newly elected Democratic Senator James Talarico, referring to him as a “transgender candidate.” This appointment raises concerns that the new Congress could face intense conflict over the passage of legislation.
