Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest person, has stepped into the arena to support Republicans in the US midterm elections. Since last July, he has donated more than $276 million to assist the party’s candidates. A significant portion of these funds is being spent on retaining the Republican majority in the Senate and driving voter turnout. This massive financial backing is providing the party with a significant advantage in its election campaign.

Details regarding Musk’s political donations had not been disclosed previously. His representatives shared this information with The New York Times ahead of the deadline for filing federal financial reports on Thursday.

Based on publicly disclosed figures, Musk is the largest donor in this midterm election cycle so far.

To help Republicans retain their Senate majority, he contributed $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund this summer—a “super PAC” that supports Republican Senate candidates. This marks the highest amount the organization has ever received from a single donor in a single quarter. During the same period, the organization’s Democratic counterpart raised less money in total from all its donors combined.

“America PAC,” founded by Musk, has also launched a major initiative to boost voter turnout. He contributed over $76 million to this super PAC—established in 2024—during the summer. The organization has spent nearly all these funds on door-to-door voter outreach, aiming to bring Republican voters who typically have low turnout rates to the polls. The group is active in seven key battleground states for Senate races and in about three dozen House of Representatives districts.

Musk has already contributed approximately $366 million to various federal-level committees for the 2025–26 election cycle. He spent around $290 million on the 2024 elections, helping to return President Donald Trump and the Republicans to power. However, he also made undisclosed donations during both election cycles. Musk’s massive spending is providing a financial boost to Republicans in the midterm elections. In the final weeks of the campaign, wealthy organizations—including a powerful pro-Trump Super PAC—are pouring vast sums into advertising. Conversely, there is no billionaire on the Democratic side spending anywhere near the amount Musk is. Despite holding some advantageous positions in the political landscape, the party remains concerned about a lack of funds.

In May 2025, Musk had stated he would significantly reduce his political spending in the future. However, he is once again spending heavily to support Trump and the Republicans, signaling his continued backing of right-wing politics. The organization has also indicated that its Super PAC will remain active for the 2028 presidential election.

Beyond the Senate Leadership Fund and America PAC, Musk has donated to several other conservative groups between July and September. He contributed $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, the primary Super PAC for House Republicans. The Lone Star Liberty PAC, which supports Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton in Texas, received $10 million. The Republican Governors Association received $10 million, and the Republican Attorneys General Association received $2 million.

Andrew Romeo, a spokesperson for America PAC, stated that if Democrats win control of Washington and secure governorships and attorney general posts in key states this November, the United States risks becoming a “socialist, ‘woke,’ and borderless” nation.

He claims that this investment is helping Republican campaign organizations convey their message to voters.

A significant portion of Musk’s funds is also being directed toward the Texas Senate race. Campaign flyers hung on voters’ doors warn that “radical Democratic socialists are winning elections across the United States.” ‘Is Texas the next target?’

According to data from America PAC officials, approximately 3,000 paid workers visited voters’ homes across the country last week. The organization claims to have reached the doorsteps of about 6.5 million households so far.

A canvasser told The New York Times that they were paid between $1.50 and $3.00 for knocking on each door amidst the scorching heat in Texas.

The majority of the more than $76 million spent by America PAC on the midterm elections went toward this door-to-door initiative. Spending on advertisements, direct mail, phone calls, and text messages was comparatively lower. A significant portion of the campaign targets Democrats; in some instances, the messaging is misleading or exaggerated.

Musk’s $10 million donation in support of Texas Senate candidate Paxton came at a time when the Republican candidate was spending far less on his campaign than his rivals. Following Musk’s $158 million contribution, the Senate Leadership Fund also launched a major advertising campaign for Paxton. In late August, the organization began an ad campaign worth $149 million on his behalf. The organization is led by allies of South Dakota Senator and Majority Leader John Thune.

Another major focus of Musk’s campaign is the issue of transgender rights. Much like in 2024, his organization is prioritizing the registration and mobilization of conservative voters over winning over undecided voters. Particular emphasis is being placed on those who typically vote less frequently—especially given that Trump’s name is not on the ballot.
