Iran is seeking to end the situation of “neither war nor peace” with the United States. President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that discussions regarding the Strait of Hormuz are currently underway with Oman.
He hopes that the ongoing talks with Oman will help resolve the “neither war nor peace” impasse between Tehran and Washington.
The strategically vital Strait of Hormuz lies at the heart of recent diplomatic efforts. Shipping traffic through this waterway remains severely restricted. In this context, Iran and Oman are discussing a potential route for the temporary passage of vessels through the strait.
Intense conflict and tension persist between Iran and the US; however, neither side has clearly moved toward a long-term agreement.
Against this backdrop, Tehran is exploring whether diplomacy can offer a way out of the current deadlock.
Tehran has put forward several demands for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, including the lifting of US sanctions and compensation for wartime damages.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has indicated that the reopening of the strait is contingent upon meeting specific conditions.
Tehran argues that the Trump administration violated the agreement signed last June—which aimed to maintain a ceasefire and move toward permanently ending the war—by launching renewed attacks on Iran.
Consequently, the US must pay compensation; only then will Tehran consider reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Mohammad Bagher Zolqadr, Iran’s security chief, told the semi-official news agency Tasnim that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz would not resume until the US “corrects its behavior.”
He added that for the waterway to be reopened, the US must meet six Iranian demands.
These include ceasing threats against Iran, lifting the naval blockade on Iranian ports, and releasing Iran’s frozen assets.
Meanwhile, the US has announced that talks with Tehran aimed at permanently ending the war have resumed.
