Saudi Arabia is set to purchase arms worth approximately $2 billion from the United States. Amid a severe deterioration of the conflict situation in the Middle East, the US State Department has approved the sale of weapons valued at roughly $1.96 billion to bolster Saudi Arabia’s air defense capabilities. This decision comes at a time when there are fears of a renewed conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, alongside heightened military tensions between Iran and the United States.
News agency AFP reported this development. A statement from the US State Department indicated that the proposed sale would ensure the security of Saudi Arabia—a key driver of political stability and economic progress in the Gulf region and a Major Non-NATO Ally. The statement noted that the sale would also advance US foreign policy and national security objectives. Under this military package, Saudi Arabia is set to acquire up to 20,000 “Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems” and related munitions, comprising 10,000 air-to-air and 10,000 air-to-ground guided missile systems. According to the US Navy, this technology is capable of destroying targets with precision at a very low cost while minimizing collateral damage.
The renowned defense manufacturer BAE Systems will serve as the primary contractor for this arms deal. The US administration has clarified that this sale will not negatively impact the United States’ own military readiness.
