Tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz have escalated further as a new cycle of attacks and counter-attacks unfolds between US and Iranian forces in the Gulf region. At least one person was killed and four others injured in a US strike on an agricultural water-pumping station in Mahshahr, Iran. Tehran subsequently stated that this latest attack has rendered the diplomatic efforts of the past few months futile.

A US military spokesperson claimed that the United States launched this new strike after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted another commercial vessel navigating the shipping lanes of the Strait of Hormuz. Approximately one-fifth of the world’s maritime trade passes through this narrow waterway. Beyond its critical importance to international trade, the Strait of Hormuz serves as a key strategic bargaining tool for Tehran. However, Washington and Tehran have maintained conflicting claims regarding the current state of shipping in the strait. Meanwhile, US military bases in the Middle East also came under Iranian attack over the weekend—strikes for which Tehran has claimed responsibility—further deepening the ongoing diplomatic deadlock between the two nations.

On Sunday, the US military launched a new, extensive offensive against Iran. US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported striking dozens of targets across various locations using precision-guided munitions, aiming to degrade Iran’s capability to attack international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM stated that the targets included Iranian air defense systems, coastal radar installations, missile and drone capabilities, and small military naval vessels. Additionally, CENTCOM noted that this operation marked the first time US fighter jets, naval vessels, one-way attack aerial drones, and one-way attack maritime drones were deployed in a coordinated manner.
