A shooting occurred in New York City’s Coney Island on the night of the U.S. Independence Day celebrations. At least eight people, including four children, were shot.

ABC News reported this information today, Sunday, citing the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

In a statement to ABC News, the NYPD said that officers rushed to the scene on West 31st Street in Brooklyn after receiving reports of gunfire at 10:37 PM local time on Saturday.

According to media reports, the injured include two men, two women, and four children. The children who were shot are aged between 6 and 14.

The injured were quickly transported to hospitals. Seven of those receiving treatment are in stable condition; however, a 21-year-old woman is reported to be in critical condition.

ABC News reported that police recovered a firearm from the scene, but no arrests have been made in connection with the attack so far.

The NYPD could not be immediately reached for comment by Reuters regarding the incident.

Yesterday marked the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. This attack took place on the very night the historic day was being celebrated.
