The US administration has officially released the draft document of the negotiated agreement between the United States and Iran. Signed electronically by both nations on Sunday, this historic document has been named the ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).’
The White House officially released the 14 points of the MoU on Wednesday.
A review of these points reveals that the initiative—aimed at resolving long-standing hostilities—includes significant conditional financial and strategic benefits for Iran. The final agreement is scheduled to be signed in person by representatives of both countries in Geneva, Switzerland, this coming Friday. Following the initial implementation of the agreement, both parties will have a 60-day window to finalize the deal.
A senior US administration official stated, “This is essentially an agreement that will enable the immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz and compel Iran to destroy its ‘nuclear dust’ [nuclear residue]. In return, provided Iran demonstrates good behavior, we will progressively expand opportunities for economic relief and the easing of sanctions.”
The MoU calls for a cessation of hostilities across all fronts, including Lebanon. It also includes provisions allowing Iran to sell oil while negotiations are underway.
