Israeli attacks continue in Lebanon
A formal agreement between the United States and Iran to halt hostilities across all fronts is scheduled to be signed this coming Friday. Yet, Israel continues to conduct airstrikes on various communities in southern Lebanon.
Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported on Wednesday that Israeli drones carried out three strikes in the city of Tyre, injuring several people. Additionally, a drone strike was launched in the Bint Jbeil district of the Nabatieh region.
This conflict in Lebanon is viewed as the greatest threat to the peace agreement between the United States and Iran. Tehran has previously warned that any renewed Israeli attacks or territorial seizures in Lebanon would be considered a violation of the agreement.
On Wednesday morning, Al Jazeera Arabic correspondents reported that Israeli forces conducted airstrikes in the Kfar Tibnit area of the Nabatieh district. Alongside operations in the town of Nabatieh al-Fawqa, they shelled the Ali al-Taher hill and the outskirts of the city.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah fighters fired at least ten rockets targeting Israeli troops near Kfar Tibnit. Earlier, on Tuesday, at least four people were killed in Israeli strikes on vehicles in the Nabatieh region; drones were also used in these attacks.
Reporting from Beirut, Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr noted that while the intensity of the conflict has subsided somewhat following the announcement of the US-Iran agreement, the attacks have not ceased entirely. Khodr stated, “Security sources believe the Israeli army is attempting to seize strategic high ground in the Nabatieh region.”
Khodr added, “Although many families have begun returning to their villages, anxiety persists among the people. They say they do not believe Israel will abide by the ceasefire.”
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that the intensity of border clashes had significantly decreased last Sunday. Last Sunday, the number of reciprocal attacks between the two sides stood at 174, whereas the figure for the previous Sunday was 705. Dujarric stated that of these 174 attacks, 169 were carried out by Israel and 5 by Hezbollah.
